Choose Yourself

Confidence isn’t optimism or pessimism, and it’s not a character attribute. It’s the expectation of a positive outcome.
— Rosabeth Moss Kanter

In 2013, I attended the Adelante Movement Conference in downtown Chicago, hosted by Nely Galán. Nely Galán is an independent producer and a former President of Entertainment for Telemundo.  During the conference, Nely gave numerous tips and ideas on what it takes to become a successful Latina.  At the time many of the ideas made sense, but I didn’t fully grasp the concept until years later as I continued my career journey.

Today I want to share the most influential idea I learned that day - kill "Prince Charming". Nely describes this as our fantasy to be saved. "Prince Charming" takes on various forms- whether it’s a romantic partner, a job we aspire to, a boss or company we idolize, a family member we rely on, and the list goes on. We lean on these forms and use them as excuses to not fulfill our potential. In her recent book, Self-Made, she enforces that we need to kill "Prince Charming" because there is no fantasy rescue. There is only YOU.

To me, this idea is about having the confidence in yourself to be you and follow your heart. When we are trapped into the routines of what society expects you to be or what is considered a successful career/life, we lose sight of our purpose and begin to blame others for our inability to action.  We become the victim in all aspects of our lives.

The road to confidence and living each day intentionally towards what you want to see in your life, is a process that takes time and readjustment as our realities change. The first step is becoming self-aware of where you are at and where you want to be. Secondly, setting long term or short term goals that can allow you to achieve your dreams/goals. Thirdly, always choose yourself- it is okay to be selfish and go after your dreams.
